Ratu Boko

 
Located about 3 km to the south of Prambanan or about 19 ​​km to the south of the city of Yogyakarta. Region Ratu Boko temple located on a hill with a height of 195.97 ± m above sea level, covering two villages, the Village Sambirejo and Dawung.

Ratu Boko is actually not a temple, but the ruins of an empire. Therefore, Ratu Boko temple is often referred to as Kraton Ratu Boko. Kraton called Boko, because according to legend the site is the palace of Ratu Boko, Lara's father Jonggrang. The word 'palace' is derived from the word Ka-ra-tu-an, which means the king's palace. Ratu Boko is estimated that the site was built in the 8th century by the Sailendra dynasty



Kraton Ratu Boko was first discovered by Dutch archaeologists, HJ De Graaf in the 17th century. In 1790 Van Boeckholtz rediscovered the ruins of ancient buildings. His discovery was published that attract scientists like Makenzie, Junghun, and Brumun which register on the site in 1814. At the beginning of the 20th century, the site Ratu Baka examined again by FDK Bosch. Research results are reported in the article entitled Keraton Van Ratoe Boko. When Mackenzie conduct research, he discovered a statue depicting a man and woman-headed god being spoon. And among the pile of rocks also found a stone pillar picture of animals, such as elephants, horses and others.

On the site Ratu Boko discovered a stone inscription dated 792 AD called Inscription Abhayagiriwihara. The contents of the inscription is the underlying assumption that Kraton Ratu Boko built by Panangkaran. Abhayagiriwihara inscription written using a script pranagari. In the inscription it is mentioned that the King Tejapurnama Panangkarana, thought Panangkaran, has ordered the construction of Abhayagiriwihara. The same name was also mentioned in the inscription Kalasan (779 M), inscription Mantyasih (907), and Central Wanua Inscription III (908 M).

According to experts, the word means without hagaya abhaya or peace, giri means mountain or hill. Thus, Abhayagiriwihara dibangin means monastery on a peaceful hill. In the reign of Rakai Walaing Kombayoni Pu, the year 898-908, Abhayagiri Temple renamed Kraton Walaing.

Kraton Ratu Boko, which occupies a wide area consists of several groups of buildings. Most of them now only in ruins.


According to its location, the buildings on site Ratu Boko temple can be grouped into five, below.
  1. Group Main Gate, located west consisting of clusters Main Gate I and II, embankments, fencing, burning temples, and the remains of the ruins.
  2. Paseban group, consisting of two shelf paseban, embankments and fences paseban including gate and some stone base.
  3. Keputren group, are in a lower page, consists of two shelf, rectangular pool, fence and gate.
  4. Pendapa group, consisting of the shelf and pringgitan gazebo surrounded by a stone wall with three gate as an entrance, a miniature temple surrounded by a rectangular terraces, some pond water reservoir surrounded by a fence complete with gapuranya and embankments structure by a fence at the it.
  5. Group of Caves, consist of Lanang Cave, Cave Wadon, bathtub, water tank, and a natural rock staircase.

Gate

The gateway to the tourist area Ratu Boko located on the west side. The group is located at the gates of the place is quite high, so from the parking of vehicles, people have to go through the uphill road as far as about 100 m. The entrance consists of two gates, namely the outer gate and the inner gate. The gate, the bigger is the main gateway.
